Passchendaele: The Necessary Battle

Philip Stevens

24 November 2017

The battle of Passchendaele, officially known as the Third Battle of Ypres, is one of the most controversial campaigns of the First World War, infamous for its scale of casualties which included over half a million men killed or wounded. In this lecture Philip Stevens will discuss the rationale behind the battles that took place between July and November 1917, and will consider why this campaign can be viewed as a prime reason for the German collapse that led to Allied victory in 1918.
