Friends ticket: The Liberation of Belsen

The Liberation of Belsen concentration camp by the British Army in April 1945

Professor Dieter Steinert

26 January 2018

When British troops entered Bergen-Belsen concentration camp on 15 April 1945 it was obvious that the liberators had no idea about what was to confront them. During the following days and weeks a number of specialised military units as well as the first relief teams provided by the British Red Cross, the Society of Friends, and the American Field Service were called to take care of the 60,000 dying, sick, starving and exhausted people encountered at the camp. This lecture will focus on the role British military units, as well as British and American NGOs, played in providing emergency relief in Belsen.
